Moored in the Marine Basin, the paddle-wheel steamer Princess Elizabeth took part with hundreds of other ships in the largest evacuation by sea of all time, Operation Dynamo, which occurred in June 1940 off the beaches of Dunkirk. The presence of this ship in the Navy Dock recalls this operation that allowed the rescue of 338,000 allied soldiers before German troops invaded the town and occupied it during the whole war.
