The Buildings

The German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven was built in the 1970s by the renowned architect Hans Scharoun.
For this reason, the main building with its impressive architecture is known as the Scharoun Building. The various exhibition areas are located on different levels. The harmony and interconnection of the exhibits are emphasised by the museum's open architecture. Each level is open and visible from the other levels.
As the original building soon became too small, it was decided to add a newer and larger structure. This extension was opened in 2000, and in it, the Berlin architect Dietrich Bangert has conformed optically with the original Scharoun Building. The extension is home to exhibitions with a focus on the history of marine exploration and the exploitation of marine resources.
