This leading position goes back a long way to the Middle Ages, with the Catalan expansion into the Mediterranean. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Port of Barcelona established itself as one of the main ports for Spanish overseas trade.

The Port of Barcelona is at present implementing two Strategic Plans aimed at adopting a common strategic framework within the Port Community with the objective of becoming the first Euro Mediterranean logistics hub.

With a total traffic of 47,4 million tonnes, over 2,3 million containers and 2,5 million passengers in 2006, the Port of Barcelona is one of the leading ports of the Mediterranean and Southern Europe.
