The development of the port activities in Barcelona during the 19th century transformed the port drastically into an industrial and commercial area. The inhabitants of the city to a certain extent turned their back on an area which had become inhospitable and occasionally even dangerous. In the 20th century the city needed modernising and more space. Port activities were extended to the outskirts of the city. The Barcelona waterfront once again faced the sea, offering inhabitants a restored leisure space.
