Santa Maria del Mar

The works of the Santa Maria del Mar church were mostly funded by wealth accruing from the overseas ventures of the inhabitants of La Ribera quarter in the 14th century. It was commonly called the cathedral of the people of the sea.
The church of Santa Maria del Mar is a building of extraordinary beauty and one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic, principally due to the fact that it was built in only fifty-four years. It has a remarkable, spacious interior and a rose window dating from the mid-15th century. The external and internal church decoration had iconography related to maritime culture and activity. Unfortunately most of it was burnt in 1936. More
