Project background

MarMuCommerce partners share a common challenge:

Public heritage institutions are increasingly asked to contribute self generated income to their budget.
However, in many cases their public and non-profit character does not allow them to become involved in commercial operations and they often lack entrepreneurial competence. MarMuCommerce aims to bridge this gap by creating a business model that introduces commercial marketing techniques and tools to public institutions.

The results of MarMuCommerce will allow museums and other regional heritage institutions to improve their market opportunities. This will enable them to contribute to the creation of employment and attract new visitors to the region while working jointly with other public or private initiatives concerning the economic revitalisation of former port areas. In this sense, MarMuCommerce contributes to the enhancement of regional development, improving the effectiveness of region al policies and instruments through the transfer of knowledge and joint development on new approaches.

The Partners consist of maritime heritage institutions from Gdansk, Bremerhaven, Dunkerque, Barcelona, Taranto, Portsmouth, Catalonia and Univer sities/public consultants specialised in SME support, entrepre neurial training and culture management. Some partners have worked together in the eContent project "eMarCon" (www.emarcon.net) where a web-based tool was developed, but this could not be jointly commercialised due to problems of partners becoming engaged in private company structures.

In order to obtain the results project partners have structured their tasks in five components:

  • Project management
  • Analysis of actual conditions
  • Legal and commercial environment
  • Training and coaching for the new structures
  • Testing the business model with a joint exhibition using the developed software tool

A substantial amount of time will be spent on analysing legal set-ups and how to create options for commercial engagement without loosing non-profit status.
