The "Musée portuaire" (www.museeportuaire.fr) was set up in 1992 on the impulse of dockers wanting to preserve witness of their work and traditions. The exhibits illustrate the major historical milestones of the port and present the lives of men and women who worked on board the ships and along the quays. The German Mining Museum (www.bergbaumuseum.de) in Bochum is the most important mining museum in the world and a highly acclaimed research institute for the history of mining and metallurgy. It is one of the most visited museums in Germany.
Exhibits above ground, and a fascinating insight mine underneath the museum grounds, offer the visitor a glimpse into the world of mining. Additionally the viewing platform on top of the headgear offers a fantastic view over Bochum and the Ruhr region.
The two main scientific research areas are the "History and Technology of Mining and Metallurgy" and the "Cultural Heritage Management". Research is not just restricted to mining, but extends into downstream processing. A second big interest is paid to the handling of cultural property with documentation, protection and presentation as main aspects. Quality management is strongly integrated into this work.
