Niceforo II Foca

Niceforo II Foca
the Byzantine Emperor considered the 2nd founder of Taranto

In 880, finally, a great Byzantine effort, organized by Basilio I, enabled re-conquest.

The restitution of the Byzantines throughout southern Italy and their preference for Adriatic ports led to a slump in the traffic and commercial rôle of Taranto. Instead, its military aspect became strengthened, expressed through the elevation of froùrion castles. But these new fortifications were not sufficient to prevent an attack on Taranto on 15 August one year between 925 and 929, when the city was destroyed by Saracens led by the Slav Sabir.
Reconstruction in 967 was directed by Niceforo II and entrusted to another Niceforo.
